“I want to be real with myself, but I don’t want you to yell at me.”
“I need a drill sergeant.”
“I want you to motivate me.”
These are some of the things that I hear on a regular basis from potential students in my transformation program, a program that some people treat as though they are preparing for war.
As tempting as it is to fire a machine gun at them when they don’t get their food logs to me, deep down, I know that it wouldn’t make much of a difference.
Pressure from without will not make diamonds. Most of the time, it just makes dust in the form of poor results, poor compliance, and ultimately poor commitment to change.
The real motivational power comes from the fire in the belly, the butterflies of excitement and desire that a truly important and aligned goal creates within you. Almost every step towards that goal is rewarding, builds belief in the vision and trust in yourself.
While rewards and threats from the outside quickly fade from good-intentioned treats and pushes to out-of-touch gold stars or, at worst, bullying from the parts of you (or your peers that you dislike the most).
How do you get and stay motivated? How do you train yourself to become an intrinsically motivated person? I’ll give you everything I've got in this episode of a Crash Course in Healing.
