Ep. 0: A Crash Course in Healing

Introducing a new podcast and a new program

After I was in a bicycle accident, I had broken my left arm and my right shoulder was fractured. I couldn’t move either arm very far, to open a door or get dressed was too painful and inaccessible to me.

A few weeks after my initial surgery to put my left arm back together, I still couldn’t move or be independent, and I did not get a lot of information from my doctors, nurses, or surgical team. Curious if I would ever be able to ride a bike or do anything athletic again, I took my radiological reports to a doctor friend to help me interpret a diagnosis. The notes were mostly in Latin and medical-ese, which required some translation.

I asked him if he knew what these notes meant. He told me he did know but that he wasn’t sure if he should tell me without someone from the surgical team present. Getting all the facts without any sense of a hopeful future would only lead to more despair.

This short program, A Crash Course in Healing, is to provide a sense of hope in the process of your physical, mental, emotional, and ultimately spiritual recovery. To share the practical tools of how to heal muscle, bones, and connective tissue while at the same time learning how to transmute emotional trauma into transformation. To metabolize, that is to create life from emotional substances, experiences, and memories that have been stuck within you for a long, long, time.

I did not have this guide at the time, but this guide is an accumulation of notes, exercises, strategies, and spiritual truths that helped me recover to the best of my ability.

I’ll share with you parts of my story before and after the accident, the things that were unhealed from my past and how they ultimately contributed to the healing process that helped me let go of my own suffering to find my own path to redemption.

So this is A Crash Course in Healing, and I’m your guide, Coach Josh. I look forward to sharing my story, lessons, and tools with you over the next few episodes.
